Keep the three chart quantities separate

The reference reports a second-weekend peak of 961,867 and a July 25 rolling 24-hour peak of 803,078. It also cites the January 2024 lifetime peak of 2,101,867. Those are different dated Steam concurrency observations, not the current live count and not cross-platform unique players. The separately announced lifetime audience over 40 million is another metric.

A design explanation is a hypothesis

Adjustable world rules can reduce repetition, early automation can prepare the next trip, and new regions can give that preparation a purpose. The cited discussion suggests those factors mattered to some returning players. A chart and a self-selected thread cannot isolate their causal contribution or predict long-term retention.

Use the argument to tune a real world

  • For relaxed co-op, keep exploration and bosses meaningful while reducing the waiting that consumes short sessions.
  • For builders, preserve material planning and staffing but reconsider interruptions that stop experimentation.
  • For collectors, spend effort on captures and team development rather than an unwanted survival chore.
  • For a harsh-survival group, keep scarcity deliberately and document exceptions for performance or administration.

A better follow-up

Compare several same-metric weekends, note platform/version changes, and watch joining, saving and server recovery as well as content additions. Do not label a historical peak as today’s audience or treat a chart alone as proof that every design complaint has been fixed.
